Tilt Servo

In this step we will mount the Tilt Servo

The Tilt servo is packaged with a piece of double sided tape already applied. If you need more tape for any reason, you should look for 3M brand "VHB" or "Very High Bond" tape. It is stronger than normal double sided foam tape.

Setup the servo horn as described below before removing the backing from the tape.

Add the servo horn to the tilt servo as shown in the image. Study this carefully. Make sure your servo is oriented the same as the picture. Note the servo horn is mounted at an angle. Try to match the angle on your servo as close as possible to this image. You may not be able to mount it at the exact same angle, but try to get it close.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The servo angle has been adjusted somewhat in the software since this image was taken. The actual angle may be slightly more vertical (less angle) than pictured, though it is still close to the pictured angle.

Add the linkage arm to the servo horn. Insert the linkage through the hole on the servo horn that is closest to the end. Carefully study the orientation. The linkage should move from the inner side to the outer side of the servo horn. The bend should be at the end that attaches to the servo.

Insert the lower end of the servo linkage through the hole in the bottom right of the lower metal frame. It is easy to fit through the hole if you hold the servo to the left the of assembly while fitting through the hole. Be careful to not contact anything on the robot with the double sided tape on the servo until we are ready to stick it in the final position.

Study the position of the servo in the image above. The servo horn will be located generally directly above the right side of the lower metal frame. The servo will be centered on the back of the tilt head.

Set the head so it is facing directly forward (not tilting up or down), then remove the backing from the double sided tape.

Affix the servo to the back of the upper metal tilt head frame. Verify everything looks straight then press the servo firmly onto the back of the head to set the tape. KEEP PRESSURE ON THE FRONT OF THE HEAD ALSO SO YOU DON'T PUT STRESS ON THE SERVO OR THE REST OF THE HEAD. PRESS THE SERVO AGAINST THE FRAME WHILE ALSO PRESSING BACK ON THE MIDDLE OF THE ULTRASONIC RANGEFINDER.

The completed head assembly should look like this from the side. Double check the angle of the servo horn, the servo linkage, the head, and the placement location of the servo looks about like it does in this image.

As a final step, install the screw in the servo horn as it attaches to the servo. This is the smaller screw in the small bag package with each servo.

The head is now complete!

As a final cleanup step, you may want to feed the servo wire through the slot next to the wing to match the length of the ultrasonic rangefinder cable. This will make the wires look more organized.

Have a quick look under the wing and make sure the servo wire is tucked out of the way. It should be away from the wheel.
